Description: A four-masted bark entitled: “James Tuft”. This model is mounted on a wooden base. Its’ base has an attached copper plaque reading: “Barkentine James Tuft, 1901”. The size scale is indicated as ” 1 ft. = 5 mm.”, and also reading: “Model by M. R. Uriburu”.
Size: (Base:) L 24 inches, W 9.5 inches
History of Object: A four-masted vessel, called “James Tuft”. This model was created by Bobby Uriburu, and it was made for Edward Tuft, a grandson of James Tuft, in 1968.

Built by Hall Brothers, Port Blakely, WA, in 1901;
Used to transport lumber.
Later she became the gambling barge 'Casino' and burned off Long Beach in 1935.
Ship named by the other co-owners after Master Mariner James Tuft (1826-1909), who moved his family to Alameda and built
2121 Central Ave in 1875.
With an office in San Francisco until it burned down in 1906, James Tuft partnered in a number of vessels with other Alameda residents and captains.

The shipyard was located on the Estuary between Grand and Chestnut Streets, and closed in 1948.
