No. 25.51.1 Subject Category: Homes of Alameda; Artists of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1940 Object: Painting, framed Description: What appears to be a tempera painting, of a garden with flowers, and a wood-shingled cottage with central door, flanked by two windows with horizontal mullions, with picket fence, and a mailbox. Name on mailbox: J. Philips. In the background can be seen some further outbuildings looking out over a body of water with a sailboat and hills beyond. Painting is in a gold-painted wood frame, behind glass and mat with blue liner. No signature visible on front. Painting is sealed off with tan backing paper. Size: L 30 x W 24 inches. History of Object: A painting of 2016 Clinton Ave (built in 1884), when it was on the Bay front. The painter was Lloyd Dundas Whiffen (1885-1951), born in India, raised in England, moved to California in 1912, and moved to Alameda in 1931. He taught night school in Alameda. This painting of the house and yard fronting Clinton Ave and a companion drawing of the side garden (25.51.2) down the dune towards the Bay were donated to the West End Library by a granddaughter of the former owner, and the Library donated it to the Alameda Museum.
