Brass plaque mounted on center of bottom section of frame states "Alaska Packers Association, fleet and shipyard, Alameda ,California, Winter 1911-1912. Size: 63x25 inches. History of Object: Picture originally hung in the main office of the Alaska Packers Association, Seattle, Washington. It was discovered there and sent to R. F. Fly, Vice President, Del Monte Corporation, who in turn presented it to the Historical Society. Acquired from: R. F. Fly (group vice president) Del Monte Corporation Date: May 13, 1982

3/25/2020 MvL: current label: OBJECTS FROM THE ALASKA PACKERS ASSOCIATION The Alaska Packers Association was organized by a merger of several salmon companies in San Francisco, in 1893. They moved their site of operation to Alameda in 1904. Salmon fishing in Alaska was a seasonal occupation. Starting in late spring, all employees and equipment were brought to Alaska by sailing ship. The salmon was caught and canned at factories there. When this process was completed the employees and finished product were returned to Alameda. The company was eventually absorbed by Del Monte.
