There are 5 photographs: a horizontal carte de visite, a cabinet-size portrait and three later images that have been trimmed down to oval portraits; plus a short (3 1/2") newspaper clipping badly stained from the glue penetrating it. An arrow in blue ink is found along the bottom margin of the carte de visite, and a white typewritten identifying label is affixed along the bottom margin of the cabinet portrait.
Size: L-12 x W–9 1/4 in.
History of Object: Photographs of Scott R. Chappel, his spouse Mary Wooley Chappel, and their daughter, Mary Chappel of Alameda who died on August 9, 1954. The carte de visite image is of special interest as it shows US Navy Officers on board the sailing vessel "Nightingale" in Clover Bay, Siberia, in 1866; Mr. Chappel is identified as a member of the crew. Family came to Alameda in 1878, living first at 1610 Central Ave. Mr. Chappel was travelling auditor for the C.P.R.R.
