They lived in a small house at 1019 Taylor Avenue which was removed to build the present one in 1895 (which still exists in 1985). In this house their last child Harold Frances Schmalz was born. He became an Alameda Police Officer, retiring after many years on the force. The collection was given to the Historical Museum by his widow Freda Schmalz.
