Size: L-8 1/2 x W-5 1/2 inches. History of Object: Formal photographic portrait of Dr. A. A. Stafford, prominent old-time physician of Alameda, California. He was the doctor in attendance at the birth of the donor. The following collection is from the Alva Opie Eisfeldt Gunzburger estate. It is mainly comprised of keepsakes she kept from her first husband's (Theodore Eisfeldt) family. Her father-in-law, Wm. Theodore Eisfeldt, was a musician (viola & oboe) and arranger. Originally from Germany (born in Anhalt, Ballenstadt, Dec. 13, 1834), he came to California in 1852. He served in the Civil War, a member of the First California Volunteers. In 1867 he settled in San Francisco and became one of the organizers of the Musicians Union No. 6. In 1892 he built a home at 1722 Buena Vista Avenue which he occupied until his death in 1915. His son, Theodore Eisfeldt, became a prominent customs’ broker in San Francisco, and married Alva Opie in 1909. Died Alameda 1923. Also included are materials relating to Alva Gunzburger's step-daughter Thelma Eisfeldt. Thelma was born in Alameda, graduated from the Alameda Sanatorium school of nursing, and died in Le Mau, France (of meningitis), while serving as a Red Cross nurse during World War l.
