The Sailor's Dress became fashionable after Peter Thomson (or Thompson), owner of a tailoring house in New York and Philadelphia around 1900, promoted sailor suits for women and children. The Catholic Church was an early promoter of the style for school uniforms. Alameda Schools - here Porter School - adapted it - at least as the style for graduation. Porter School Elementary - already empty - burned down in 1973 and the site is now part of the grounds of Alameda High School.
