No. 21.131.1 Subject Category: Businesses of Alameda Date or Period: c. 1880s Object: Photograph Description: a sepia oval print of a photo of lithographic print of a bearded man in black suit, surrounded by a rectangular black surround partially edged with gold. The image is mounted on card stock, with on the reverse, printed in gold type and decorated with classical designs, including an own and a book, the name 'E. Grabiel, Photographer, Santa Clara Avenue, Few Doors from P.O.'. The image had been cut to fit a frame; corners have been cut off, and the bottom has been shortened. Size: L 6 1/4" x W 4 1/4" History of Object: Photograph of an image Reverend Cyrus Taggart Mills (1819-1884), who founded Mills College in Oakland, by Alameda photographer Edwin Graybiel (1853-c. 1, Santa Clara Avenue, who had office a 'Few Doors' from the original location of the Main Post Office, which was in the Tucker Building on the corner of Park and Santa Clara (completed 1879). Mills brought the school from Benicia to Oakland in 1871. Mills College ceased to exist as independent entity in 2021. The Graybiel family (Michael, pattern maker, Edwin, photographer, Alice, painter) lived in Alameda around 1884, initially at the Alameda Hotel, and by 1886 Edwin had a separate business on Santa Clara, east of Park, res. same.
