History of object: Interior photo taken by Myron Shew (1824-1891) of the parlor of the John G. Ward residence at 1539 Versailles Ave. This house was erected in 1878 on Regent St., and was moved to its present address in 1885. It was built in the Italianate style by Thomas Hayselder & Son of Alameda at a cost of $3,500. The original owner, John G. Ward, was a cashier at the Cutting Packing Co. of San Francisco. The parlor is illuminated by a kerosene chandelier of the period before gas lighting was introduced; it was probably taken during the summer months as the mantle is heavily draped, indicating that it was not in current use.
The following associated items (Acc. Nos. 15.120.2-6) belonged to the estate of Annie Jane Ward, daughter of John G. Ward, who never married. She graduated from Lincoln School in 1914 and from Alameda High School in 1918. Ms. Ward died in 1980.
Acquired from: Estate of Annie J. Ward--through efforts of Jean Sanchirico.
