History of Object: Studio portrait of Judge Robert Tappan attired in a Chinese peasant-style linen outfit, but wearing an incongruous pair of black leather loafers. Other archival photos indicate that the judge was fond of Chinese culture, and had a Chinese houseboy from whom he learned to speak Chinese.
