Description

Acc. No. 95.269.2 Subject Category: Citizens of Alameda Date or Period: Ca. 1890 Object: Photograph Description: Sepia-toned albumen print cabinet-size photo mounted on dk. Burgundy paperboard. Photographer: Nast, of San Francisco and Alameda. Upper margin has been trimmed and nail holes are found on all four corners. Old cataloging sticker and a description label are affixed over the image. Size: L-5 1/2 x W-4 in. History of Object: Portrait of Mr. John Nelson Webster, who built the Webster house on Versailles Street in Alameda, currently the oldest home in Alameda. Note: Webster Street in Oakland, and by osmosis via the Webster Street Bridge, Webster Street in Alameda (originally Euclid Street) was named after Daniel Webster. This renaming prompted a renaming of Alameda’s original Webster Street (to prevent having two streets named the same) to Fillmore (after the former US president). This original Webster street was parallel to the streets named after the two men who together with Daniel Webster were instrumental in getting California to statehood: Clay Street (named after Henry Clay) and Calhoun Street (named after John C. Calhoun). Alameda’s John Nelson Webster (on the photo cataloged here) was not related to Daniel Webster. Acquired from: Mrs. Effie Paterson (1949) Date: 11/4/95 Pre-1971 donation, old cat. #412
