Size: L-17 X W-15 inches History of Object: Framed photo of Sherman Joseph Fish (1848-1900), depicted in his Civil War uniform. An Alameda volunteer, he joined Company D., 8th Regiment of the Infantry at the age of 16 years. He arrived in Alameda in 1853 accompanied by his mother, Lydia and step-father, James Millington. 5/28/2020 MvL: current label: CIVIL WAR VOLUNTEER SHERMAN JOSEPH FISH (1848-1900) Though only 16 years old, he managed to enlist in the Union Army and was assigned to Company D of the 8th Infantry Regiment. He is photographed here in his uniform. He had arrived in Alameda in 1853 along with his mother, Lydia, and his step-father, James Millington. He was among the first seven students to attend the Schermerhorn School, 1853, Alameda's first public school.
