Photograph signed "TABER", San Francisco. Size: 293 by 26 inches History of Object: Picture of dredger invented by Col. Alexis W. Von Schmidts. This dredger was used by the United States Government in dredging out the lower part of the estuary. As well as filling in land west of Webster Street, which later (enlarged) became Alameda's Naval Base. Col. Von Schmidts (gentleman in stove pipe hat) is seen on deck supervising operations. THIS DREDGER WAS USED BY THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT IN DREDGING OUT THE LOWER PART OF THE ESTUARY. AS WELL AS FILLING IN LAND WEST OF WEBSTER STREET, WHICH LATER ( ENLARGED) BECAME ALAMEDA'S NAVAL BASE. COL. VON SCHMIDTS (GENTLEMAN IN STOVE PIPE HAT) IS SEEN ON DECK SUPERVISING OPERATIONS.
