Photo of William Charles Forsyth (in uniform), Alameda Postman, carrier #5. During the year 1890, the Board of Trustees that governed Alameda, applied to the United States Government for free postal delivery to homes. This request was approved which necessitated the hiring and training of postmen. The late Mr. Forsyth told the donor (his stepdaughter) that he was the third man to be hired as Alameda's first group of postmen.
