No. 23.43.9 A-H Subject Category: Transportation, trains, electrical, steam Date or Period: 1900s-1940 Object: Photographs Description: A collection of black-and-white photographs, all featuring a train or trains except I, which shows a station. A number of them have red wax pencil marks; most have or had a label of typed information on acid-discolored paper, some scotch-taped to the back, or 'col' indications. Sizes: various, smallest: L 4 x W 8 inches; largest L 7 x W 11 inches. History of Object: A collection of photographs likely intended for a publication. A: Southern Pacific Locomotive No. 1200, a steam train which ran the 'Horseshoe' route from the Oakland Pier to the Alameda Pier in the early 1900s. After 1911 this route was taken over by the less polluting and less noisy electrified 'Red' trains. B: 'Kelly' car 307, so called after designer W.F. Kelly of Oakland Traction Company in the Key System shops in 1905, is ready for service on the No. 9 line between Oakland and Alameda in just after being rebuilt in 1914; C: A 'Dinkey' train waits for departure to Alameda at 14th and Franklin station in Oakland, early 1920s; D. A ‘long’ Southern Pacific horseshoe loop train waits for commuters at the Alameda Mole, late 1938. E. has a Southern Pacific number 6 red train on the rocky section between Pacific Junction and Fifth and Central, with the Bay directly alongside as Main Street turned onto Central, Nov, 1940. Photographer Vernon Sappers; F. shows the 'Special Service' electric red train crossing the Fruitvale Bridge, from Oakland to Alameda, for the farewell excursion of Dec, 1940.
