History of Object: Views of the United Engineering Works activities; #a-r are interior views of various machine shops; #s-u are exterior views of workmen involved with a cement mixer, welding, and a hoist and boiler.
This firm was started in San Francisco around 1896, and it came to Alameda in 1902 wherein it bought 14 acres on the estuary east of Webster St. It was engaged in maritime repair work, shipbuilding. It serviced the Alaska Packers, Matson Navigation, and the Pacific Mail Steamship Co. It was sold in 1916 to the Union Iron Works Co., which soon became part of Bethlehem Steel Co. The donor was the shipyard manager for a number of years.
