Description: black-and-white prints of early photos of Alameda Schools, A-G are stamped on reverse 'Louis Stein, Berkeley' (on G, overwritten with the name of the donor), and have a white border. G and H are the same image but H has no border, is a lighter print, and has no stamp on the verso. B, D, E, and H have scotch-tape glue damage the left and right edge. Images have varying amount commentary on the reverse, in pen and pencil and in different handwriting. A has a corrective label. B shows a white spot which appears to have been on the negative.
In A, B, C, E, and G-H, a (bearded) man with bowler hat, long black coat, and white shirt collar appears to be posing, D, E, and F (also) have children, D, E and G-H a horse and carriage.

History of Object: set of photographs which appears to have been previously owned by Louis L. Stein Jr. The photos are of: A. Bay Farm Island school (with a man - perhaps the school master?) B. Everett School; C. Haight School; D. Longfellow School; E. Mastick School; F. Porter School, G, H. Wilson School. On B and G-H, the buildings appear just finished, with mounds of dirt on the school yard and street.
Louis Lorenz Stein, Jr., born in 1902 in Berkeley, died November 11, 1996, a pharmacist, was a collector of local historical artifacts. Joe Durein is a descendant of one of the earliest merchants on Park Street, a past president of the Museum Board, and was a resident of Alameda for a long time.
