Cover has an image of the official badge for the 20th encampment, featuring an eagle with spread wings holding two crossed canons attaching to a ribbon with an American flag with 13 stars and 13 stripes, and a 5-pointed star with five figures, two shaking hands and two embracing, underneath stating 'G.A.R. Veteran 1886'. Book is badly damaged on the lower left corner (many pages), with some damage on the top right side of the front cover, which is loose. Damage has obliterated half of the publisher's information on the frontispiece. Book included 7 six-pointed stars fashioned from gold paper with imprinted motif. Size: L 6 1/2" x W 5" History of Object: Register, published by Joseph L. Tharp, San Francisco, 1886, of the participants in the 20th encampment, San Francisco, August 4, 1886, of the Grand Army of the Republic, an organization, founded in 1866, of veterans of the Army, Navy and Marines who served in the American Civil War. Pages 48-49 lists the members of the Joe Hooker Post, No. 11, Alameda, who attended the event, with their service company and city of residence. The book belonged to John Howard Miller, MD, of San Leandro, whose son Harold had a practice in Alameda. It was donated to the museum by the latter's grand-daughter.
