Size: (frame) History of Object: a rubbing of the name of Corporal Charles C. Pedrick, as appears on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C., dedicated in 1982. Charles is honored on Panel 55@, Line 30. People can request these rubbings of the names on the memorial. Cpl Pedrick is also honored, with other Alameda Veterans and casualties of the Vietnam War, on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on Bay Farm Island. The Vietnam War (1955-1975) was fought between North and South Vietnam and allies; North Vietnam was supported by the Soviet Union and China, South Vietnam by the United States and allies. In this conflict, the US used chemical weapons to destroy jungle where Viet Cong (fighters for North Vietnam) could hide. Eventually, U.S. public opinion turned against U.S. involvement in the war. Charles was born May 30, 1946 in Oakland, CA, graduated from Alameda High School in 1965, and attended College of Idaho, Caldwell, Idaho for two years. He enlisted in U.S. Army and volunteered for Viet Nam duty. Received purple heart and two Bronze Stars, one for Valor. He died June 24, 1968, killed while loading a wounded comrade onto a helicopter. Charles is buried at san Francisco National Cemetery. He was in Co C,5/60,9 INF DIV. Charles' Parents, having moved here around 1958, remained in Alameda.
