Description: Wooden box with label marked Stanley Universal, with illegible text at the bottom, 55. Contains four Cutter Boxes, each with a set of small blades and marked with the number of the box, the shape and number of each blade, and Stanley Rule & Level Co., New Britain, Connecticut, Cutters for Stanley Universal Plane No. 55. Two of the cutter boxes have wooden lids.
Original tags for cutter boxes had numbers U13 A-D (A, or No. 1, is missing tag.)
Size: Each cutter box is approx. 10” W by 4” T and larger box is approx. 12“ W by 7.5” T
History of Object: box with cutters for a plane (see 25.110.12), part of a collection of carpentry tools, owned by John Ucovich (presumed), an immigrant carpenter from Montenegro. John Ucovich moved to Alameda around 1925, and ran a trucking business in Oakland. By 1938 John (aged 61) lived with his wife, Myrtle May, at 775 Santa Clara. He died as the result of injuries sustained after being run over by a streetcar on March 28, 1938.
