立花飛騨守家来上下三人従上総国冨津筑後国栁河江差越候 御関所無異儀可被成御通候 已上 We are sending three retainers of different ranks under Tachibana Hida-no-Kami [Akitomo, daimyo of Yanagawa], from Futtsu, Kazusa to Yanagawa, Chikugo. Please let them through the sekisho without objection. 立花飛騨守内 矢嶋隼人 Yajima Hayato, under Tachibana Hida-no-Kami 嘉永七寅年七月十日 10th day of the 7th month of Kaei 7 [1854], year of the tiger 箱根御関所 御番衆中 Dear guards at the Hakone Sekisho The Yanagawa domain was in charge of the Futtsu side of the Uraga Channel defense against Western ships from 1853 to 1858. Earlier in 1854, Matthew Perry’s fleet was in the bay to sign the Convention of Kanagawa.
