Binding Notes

Strikingly bound in straw-colored yellow cloth and stamped in brick red-brown and black, it portrays a man dressed in black colonial attire holding a sign bearing the author's name. He appears to be standing in front of a brick wall or fireplace. Simple black titles to spine, but black and red-brown alternate striping to rear cover. The design was made in September 1897 just before the first edition of this book was published, and was also used on posters advertising the book. Binding designed by Maxfield Parrish (second binding designed by him), monogram to proper left of man on the cover, underneath the brick wall/fireplace.
