'John Phillips was born in Salem Mass. June 22,1701, the son of Samuel and Sarah Phillips.He apprenticed to Col. Henchman as a Stationer and Bookseller and married, in 1723, to Mary, the eldest daughter of Nicholas Buttolph (1694) a Bookbinder and Bookseller.'
