Binding Notes

Bound in flexible green diagonal-fine-rib-grain cloth in a wrap-around design, an unsigned binding by Bertha Stuart. (Stuart designed the companion volume). Black and white photographic scenic endpapers. All edges gilt. Design is a scene of tall Pacific Northwest evergreens growing against a backdrop of snow-covered mountains and hanging clouds. Title is within a framed center rectangle with a motif of elongated clouds. This motif is carried over the spine and onto the top of the entire rear cover, where a group of clouds hang before the treeline. The entire design is created using only bright and matte gilt. The overall effect of the design is very Asian inspired. The right left corner, also in gilt, has the Henry Holt monogram with owl (very unusual).
