TO THE MEMBERS OF THE SPECIAL WAC DETACHMENT
The Manhattan Project received world acclaim for its part in bringing the war to an end. Much has been said of the responsibilities of various groups in connection with the development of the Atomic Bomb. As in all great endeavors public knowledge is limited to those who played the post spectacular roles.
Little is known of the significance of the contribution to the Manhattan Project by hundreds of members of the Woman's Army Corps. Most of you were assigned the meticulous task of handling great volumes of highly secret papers dealing with all phases of the development of the Atomic Bomb. Others worked on scientific and technical problems.
Since you received no headline acclaim, no one outside of the Project will ever know how much depended on you as one who observed your performance month after month. I wish to express my personal as well as official appreciation for your performance.
You can well be proud of your service with the Manhattan District and the part you played in the saving of countless American lives. All of you should take great pride in the contribution you made to the successful completion of the development of the Atomic Bomb.
