"D.L. Cleeland, Jeweler and Optician" tin smalts sign is pressed tin with an ornate picture-frame-like border. Background is medium blue sand smalts; copy and frame are painted silver. The technique could be called, "folksy." There is inconsistencies in lettering sizes and spacing. The first line of copy is crisp as in the second line, “Jewelers and Optician.” However, the third line in the ribbon is very inconsistent, with various strokes of the letters thick and thin. The “ES” at the end of the line of copy is obviously too tight and squeezed in. D.L. Cleeland was a jeweler, watchmaker and professional optician who was born in Mercy county, Pennsylvania in 1855. Having learned the watchmaker's trade through employment with J.R. Snyder (Harrisville, PA,) he was able to purchase his own business in 1881. In 1888, he became a member of the firm Cleeland & Ralston and a few short years later, this particular business opened in 1893. He renovated the building and operated the business from it in Butler, PA.Collection
