T The business was founded by brothers Sam, Phillip and Roy Smith at 1707 Vine Street in the over the the Rhine neighborhood of Cincinnati. It operated in the same location for 84 years before being destroyed in April 2010 in a fire. Phillip had upon his death in 2001 left the business to Larry Ashford who had worked at the store since the age of14. Smitty's was open 365 days per year and was a popular spot for laborers to cash their paychecks, hence the sign. The store was well-known nationally and was a "must stop" for visiting hip hop artists, professional boxers, etc. Ashford was eventually able to re-open the business a few blocks south at another Vine Street location.
