Description

The famous bread brand got its start in 1911 with the Domestic Science Baking Company located on W 5th St about a half mile from the Ohio River. The company’s butternut bread recipe became one of its best sellers. Domestic Science eventually sold to the Schulze Baking Company which later became a part of the Interstate Bakeries- the main producer of Hostess items. The Butternut Bread brand remained popular with customers though the eventual bankruptcy of Interstate Bakeries led to the closure of the 5th St plant. The Museum acquired these 1950s porcelain letters on a porcelain raceway with the help of United Maier Signs who sent a crew to quickly remove the sign before the factory was demolished.
