Description

Saywell drugstore was located in downtown Hudson, OH. It was founded by Fred Saywell in 1909 (the building formerly housed a pharmacy ran by Dr. George Miller) who ran the shop until 1951. In 1952, he sold it to his brother Harvey Hanna Sr. who owned it until late 1974 when he sold it his sons. They ran the store until it closed in 2005. The operation included a soda fountain where cold drinks and ice cream sundaes could be ordered and enjoyed at the counter. Rick and John began working in their family’s drugstore at an early age. This porcelain enamel and neon, projecting sign was created by the Bellow’s sign company of Akron and installed in about 1952. Its main face is white with vertical striping; Saywell's is a script, DRUGS are capital letters, and all lettering is illuminated with neon. This sign was one of two signs that came from the historic downtown area of Hudson, OH, at this time, (see also 2019.0002.0011).
