A double-faced, painted sheet metal and neon sign. The sign reads: "Loyal Order of Moose PAP". It was originally pole-mounted and includes angle-iron, "maintenance platform."Context
The sign originally identified Moose Lodge #288 in Lansing, MI. It was moved to another Lansing lodge location in 1973 and later restored, including neon and new paint in 1985. According to the donor, it was built around 1952. The Moose order was founded in 1888 in Louisville Kentucky. The 'PAP' stands for 'Purity, Aid, and Progress' and was used as a greeting for 'Moose' members. Until 1974 lodges could and did discriminate against non-white members from not only becoming members but also being served at events. Today on their website they feature a "Diversity Statement" to demonstrate their current values.Collection
