1967.1.7Description
Oil on canvas depicting the corner of Meridian and Thirteenth Streets in Anderson, IN during the mid-1950s. A large gray building dominates the composition in the center, with a diner in the center called "The Nook." To the left is a taxi sign and a green awning with a sign that reads "Shoe Shine Parlor." To the far left is a stack of wood. To the left of center is a man leaning against a vacant store with a sign in the window "moved" and next to it is a new and used furniture store and next to that is a barber shop. In the foreground there is a street and curb and a woman carrying a shopping bag and holding hands with a child in a pink snowsuit. Above the figures is a traffic light. It is probably a late fall or winter scene because the trees in the background do not have leaves. The painting is signed in the lower right corner in black paint, "Marion Boyd."
The painting is framed in a heavy three-tiered wooden molding painted a dusty gray-beige. A small brass plaque on the center bottom from of the frame reads, " Meridian & 13th Yesterday By Marion Boyd Presented By The Art Club to Anderson Civic Art Association." On the verso of the stretcher appears the manufacturer's name, "DEVOE" and the stretcher sizes, plus "1956 MERIDIAN AND THIRTEENTH YESTERDAY ANDERSON, IND." in black marker and "PURCHASED BY THE ART CLUB." The number 141 appears and is crossed out in pencil. From the verso three tags were removed, one listing the active members of the Art Club for 1956-1957, one listing the officers of the club, and one giving a brief history of the painting. All three tags are included in the accession file.
The tag describing the history of the painting reads, "This landmark, located at the Southeast corner of Thirteenth and Meridian, Anderson, Indiana, known as the Foster Building, was torn away shortly after this picture was painted to make way for a public parking lot. The picture was presented to the Civic Art Association by Mrs. Robert Heaton, President of the Art Club of Anderson, at an afternoon teas in the home of Mrs. Chandler Werbe on June 2, 1957. Mrs. Ralph Boyd, a Club Member, was the Artist."Type of Painting
