Description

The central is image that of a woman walking down a narrow footpath with a basket balanced on her head. She supports the white flower. Her shoes appear to be on the wrong feet and made in the fashion of Dutch wood shoes. In the basket on the girl's head appear to be two chickens and a duck. The surrounding landscape is relatively barren, though there are suggestions of overall green-ness about it. In the lower-left background appear three mud-like houses, and the middle one appears to have smoke rising from the chimney. Several bird-like forms can be seen over the houses. The woman wears a white blouse, striped vest, green stockings, and a green skirt. Signed "E. Bayard" in the lower left corner, and "4.93" is written in the lower right corner. On an aged card previously attached to the back (now in accession file) reads: Emile Bayard.
