Balcony with dense clouds immediately below; text written on top of clouds. A woman wearing a robe, which is blowing in the wind, is kneeling on the balcony with her elbows on the railing, hands on her chin and is looking to the right. There is a bird flying in the upper left corner. A section of a tapestry is hanging behind the woman on the wall across from the
balcony in the upper right corner. Small areas of blue appear between the floor and cloud.
Email from William Pearl "Your print shows kabuki actor Onoe Kikugorô III in the role of Shirai Gonpachi. The kabuki play is 'Ume no hatsuharu gojûsan tsugi' ('Plum Spring: The Fifty-three Stations'). The date is 2nd month of 1835, the publisher is Yamamoto-ya Heikichi, and it was performed in the Ichimura theater in Edo (now Tokyo). This print was originally part of a diptych, or possibly a triptych. I am attaching an image of 2 sheets."Acquisition
