Milking a Cow at Platte Purchase DaysEntry/Object ID
2023.ACM.51Description
The Platte Purchase Days event provided a way for community members to experience history coming to life. Milking a cow, shown in this photograph, was common practice on a farm in 1830s and was one of the many different scenes visitors would see during the event.
In the photograph, five people are surrounding a milking cow. Four of them are in costumes that represent clothing from the early 19th century. From left to right, the man on the farthest left is wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a work shirt from that period. Next, to him on the right is a female wearing a blue skirt, black shirt, and bluebonnet. To her left is a young boy sitting on a milking stool, milking the cow. The boy is wearing a white long-sleeved shirt and black pants. The cow is brown except for the head, which has white on top of its head, in its ears, and near its mouth and nose with a light tan harness on. Next, to the young boy milking the cow is another young boy who is standing next to the cow, petting it. He is wearing a white long-sleeved shirt and dark brown pants. He also has a leather sheath for holding a knife. Next, to him is a female wearing a white dress and white bonnet, who is also petting the cow. There is a black feed tub, which is empty, near the feet of the boy and woman in the white dress on the ground. There is a fence that surrounds the people and the cow. In the background, on the left, is the Marx Cabin next to a tree. On the other side is the Andrew County Museum. In the background, in the center of the photo, is the flagpole with the United States flag and the Missouri flag underneath it. There are houses farther back in the background behind the flagpole.Photograph Details
