An Evening in the West started in 1995, the event was presented by cowboys bringing the old West back to life through cowboy poetry, music, and sometimes theater. It started at the Savannah High School, and in the first year, all the proceeds went to the Boy Scouts and 4-H clubs. During this first year the performer was Fred G. Ellis, and he did poetry and comedy. The second year the entertainer was R.W Hampton, who did poetry and music and who came back several different years. In 2000, the entertainment was a play called “The Last Cowboy", this play was set in 2025 as a commemoration of the way cowboys lived through history. After 2000, for several years, it was held at a performing arts center at St. Joseph Missouri Western. The “An Evening in the West” event ended in 2007.

He is standing up wearing a cowboy hat, jeans, and boots. The guitar has a strap that is also on the man's shoulder as he plays. He has a mustache, and in front of him is a microphone stand with a mic. The stage is, decorated with wagon wheels, hay, and a fence with horse saddles on the fence. The man also has a stool next to him. The stage has yellow curtains near the front of the stage with speakers as well. In front of the stage, at the bottom, is a white and blue sign that is covered by some members of the audience's heads. It reads "Andrew County Museum Historical Society." The audience is on the gym floor sitting in metal folding chairs with some of the chairs on the back have been painted or written with "SHS" on them. Near the top left of the photograph is a partial American flag where only the stripes are visible, and underneath it is a door and the Savannah Savage mascot. Several audience members are wearing heavier clothing, including sweaters and jackets. There are several empty seats, but they are not easily noticeable. In the front of the audience, near the left-hand side, is a man in a striped top with a video camera. On the back of the photo is "Kodak Official Sponsor of the Olympic Games" with the Olympic Games rings underneath and "Kodak Royal Paper."Photograph Details

The Andrew County Museum Historical Society held the Evening in the West at Savannah High School. The event was a success and continued for several years bring the community together. The event audience would listen to western music and watch plays along with other acts. Photographed is R.W. Hampton on stage with his guitar.
