Description

This painting was part of the Martha's General Store exhibit. The exhibit made its first appearance in the museum at the Clasbey Center and then again once the new museum building opened. The exhibit was located in the museum basement. This oil painting is of the Old Wyeth Store that hung in the Martha's General Store exhibit, which allowed guests to step into the past to see what a general store looked and felt like. Oil painting of a store with a single gasoline pump in front. The entrance is centered with a green framed screen door. There are large windows on each side. On each side, the windows have "WYETH CASH/GENERAL STORE." The cement in front of the store is cracked. To the right are two trees. To the left is a barbed wire fence with wooden posts. Another tree is visible at the back of the store. In the lower right of the painting in red is "Wm Brand/75." The border around the painting (matting?) is off-white/light tan. The frame is wooden with decorative slashes both large and small. Looks as though there was some whitewashing for slashes. A yellow heavy paper taped to the lower left has "GIFT/by Maurice McCarty/'The Old Wyeth Store/by/William Brand/Raytown, Missouri." Back: Eye screws on either side with wire between for hanging. The backing board is held in the frame with nails, two on the right, two at the bottom, and one on the left and top.
