Description

Gadfly, one of the larger Hutchinson sedan commuters, spent a good portion of her life in Michigan before being donated to the Museum in 1994. Gadfly is still very original. She is assigned to the Museum's In-Water Fleet and has provided hundreds of Museum patrons with the opportunity to enjoy traveling on the River in the secure comfort that is the embodiment of her style. She has been a favorite vessel for day trips around the River or longer excursions to Ottawa and Montreal. Her large displacement hull often disguises the actual speed that swiftly propels this grand boat to her destination ahead of most other boats. Whether her passengers choose her snug cabin or prefer her large open aft cockpit, Gadfly is a superb craft with marvelous accommodations. Gadfly's round hull softens the jar often associated with choppy seas. Hutchinson hull designs were especially well designed with smooth, soft riding characteristics. Their joinery work was unmatched for precision fit and strength. To own a Hutchinson was to possess one of the finest examples of marine craftsmanship. Hutchinson always selected the best quality mahogany that earned for them a reputation for superior natural finishes. The examples of Hutchinson boats exhibited at the Antique Boat Museum possess nearly all of their original mahogany planking so viewers can still examine the precise joinery and wood selection that resulted in their excellent reputation.
