Description

The 1970 series of the America's Cup races marked the official hundred-year anniversary of one of the oldest and most glamorous of international sport rivalries. This book, in fact, looks back another twenty years to the original America, commissioned in 1851 by a group of New Yorkers for the specific purpose of challenging the British yachting world. The Hundred Guinea Cup, which the America won at Cowes that year for winning the race around the Isle of Wright, was presented in 1857 to the New York Yacht Club as a perpetual challenge trophy in international yachting. It has been known ever since as the America's Cup. The schooners, cutters and sloops that have competed for the Cup beginning in 1870 comprise some of the fastest and most beautiful sailing boats ever built. John Gardner's superb color plates capture in accurate detail the qualities of sixteen of the most famous yachts, from the America to 1970's Intrepid and Gretel II. Line drawings of every competitor in the races provide a valuable visual record, and are accompanied in each case by specifications and comparisons of scale and proportion. The choice of which of the twenty-one series to describe and which yachts to illustrate has depended on the interest and excitement of the races themselves and on the importance of individual yachts as trend-setters in matters of design. Commander Lipscomb, author of a number of books on naval and maritime subjects, has written an absorbing account of the most eventful of these classic encounters, including those stormy episodes that have frequently ruffled the waters of international competition, arising from the controversial conditions governing the design of the yachts and the racing rules.
