In the middle 1950s, John Hacker's involvement in the Hacker boat Company was slowly declining, as was the company itself. It was a transitional period when other designers were hired, and the company began taking its design inspirations from other companies such as Chris Craft rather than producing truly original boats. The Hacker boat Company also failed to adapt to new the new materials and construction techniques of the 1950s. This led to a precipitous decline, and in 1956 the company closed its doors, and the name was sold.
The accession record for this boat indicates that it was built in 1955, but it seems more likely that it was made after the original Hacker Boat Co. went bankrupt in 1956 and the name 'Hackercraft' was sold to someone else. The boat is very similar to the 16' Lyman outboard (see acc. no. 2004.003) and nothing like any boat created by the Hacker Boat Co. The branding is not at all like that of the original Hackercrafts, nor does the phrase "Hacker Boat Co." appear anywhere on the boat. The styling is very 1950's, with plastic fitting in the shape of a nautical wheel, swinging cupholders, etc. The motor is an Evinrude Lark 35 hp, from 1958.
The boat is built of plywood lapstrake over bent frames, much like the Lymans of the time. The windshield and decks are mahogany and mahogany plywood. This boat is in fairly good shape, thought the finish is not perfect and the veneers are cracking in some places. EVS 08Collection
