Penn-Yan introduced the Car Top in 1936 as a light, convenient boat that a couple could take to a nearby lake and go out on for a day trip. Powered by oars or an outboard motor, the Car Top became very popular and is one of the most commonly seen Penn Yan boats today. Old Town quickly responded and introduced their own version, the Sportboat, in 1941. The Penn Yan Car Top went out of production in 1959.
This is a WXH model, which was introduced in 1940 as a slightly heavier-built boat designed to carry a more powerful outboard motor. The WXH was rated for a 5 hp motor, and the more lightly built WX a 2 ½ hp motor. It has half-ribs in the bottom and an extra-long transom knee. This one was most likely in 1952 or subsequent years, because during that time the standard color was "Nile green with a red stripe below the gunwale," which seems to describe the color scheme of this boat. It has with it a set of 6-foot leathered and varnished oars with captive horns for use with the side-plate sockets on the boat. This boat is in remarkably good shape.Collection
