Description

1920s paddlewheel boat with bicycle-style steering. The boat was a wedding gift associated with the second marriage of Jack L. Gorham to Irene A. Taylor in 1936. The Gorhams lived in Rochester, New York but maintained a cottage at Tichenor Point. Importantly, Paul Kellogg always referred to his friend Mr. Gorham as George Eastman’s personal assistant. Mr. Gorham joined Eastman Kodak in 1895, seven years after the company was started. Upon graduating from Rochester Business Institute, Mr. Gorham rose from the title of bookkeeper to auditor, general accountant and became Assistant Treasurer in 1919, a title that he held until retiring in 1946 after 51 years of service. Mr. Gorham was a long-time customer of Paul Kellogg’s restaurant and allowed Paul to take his family to the Gorham’s cottage at Tichenor Point on Monday’s when the they were back home in Rochester and Paul had the day off. When the commute between Rochester and Canandaigua became too much for the Gorham’s, Mr. Gorham arranged the sale of the cottage and virtually all of its contents to Paul in 1972. This is when Paul took ownership of the boat. He then gifted it to his grandson Greggory DiSalvo in 2018. Gregg and his wife Emily were married at Tichenor Point in 2017 and used the boat for their wedding send off. Paul Kellogg, who was honored as Mr. Canandaigua in 1999 for his civic contributions, was the former owner of Kellogg’s Pan-Tree Inn, an historic icon in Finger Lakes dining. Paul’s mother and a partner started the original Kellogg’s Pan-Tree Inn in 1918, a time when few women were college-educated and business owners. Paul eventually took ownership of the restaurant from his parents whom he worked side by side with for many years. Just like the Gorhams, it was not uncommon to find one of the Fortune 500 business leaders from nearby Rochester and their family having dinner at the Pan-Tree, often privately dining at the large staff table in the kitchen. In addition to the wedding send-off, the boat was a favorite of many of the members of the Kellogg family for leisurely time on the water, exploration, swimming, sunning and even fishing.
