Canoe, Canadian Canoe Company
(from banner prepared for 2008 WCHA Assembly):
Constructed in the batten-seam wide-board style that was developed in the Peterborough region in the 1870s, this canoe has 4 white cedar planks per side and the seams are covered with raised wood battens inserted between the ribs. According to donor Gordon "Sandy" Douglass, she was built in 1914. Sandy Douglass sailed this canoe at the 1935 ACA meet at Sugar Island, where he won the Open Class sailing canoe race for both decked and open canoes. Sandy's skill as a canoe sailor landed him on the 1937 Canadian Olympic canoe sailing team, but he ended up not going. Sandy sailed many styles of sailing canoe (including the 16/30 and IC10) and went on to design some other very well known sailing craft, including the Thistle One-Design, Highlander, and Flying Scot One-Design sail boats.Collection
