Description

This Rushton Indian Girl canoe was made at the Rushton workshop, most likely by Rushton's son. It is modified from the standard Indian Girl design, having feather-lap planks and a smooth hull without the typical canvas cover, indicating that it was a special order. It was given to Ruth Margaret Trett McMorran as a birthday gift. Family history says it was for her 13th birthday, but the serial number seems to indicate that it was actually made two years later in 1914 rather than 1912. The canoe stayed in the family, becoming a prominent part of the family's memories of summers spent on Trout Lake. More history of the family and the canoe is in the accession file, along with five photos in an envelope and a history of Trout Lake written by the local historical society. The canoe was donated by Elizabeth Schetina, the grand-daughter of the original owner. It has been in California since the 1970s and has not been in the water for at leat 30 years prior to donation. It is in excellent condition for its age.
