Description

Birchbark canoe built by Cesar Newashish circa 1930-1950 at Manowan Reservation, Quebec. Cesar Newashish is the subject of the documentary "Cesar's Canoe". This information from donor. The canoe's name, Gasno Gao, is the Seneca word for birch bark canoe. History from Larry Zuk on file in accession files. NB: Ferdy Goode has indicated that this is unlike any canoe built by Newashish. Rather it is probably one of the canoes out of Maniwaki, Quebec, possibly William Commanda. DJM 3/2009
