Description

2000.011 Boat Type: Canoe Builder: Peterborough Canoe Co. Length: 15' 9" Beam: 34" The Peterborough Canoe Company was founded in the early 1890s in Peterborough, Ontario. The company grew to be a major producer of many types of small craft before going out of business in 1961. The company was known for making longitudinal strip boats such as this one, where relatively thin planks are ship-lapped and laid parallel to the sheerline. Peterborough canoes also typically have many half-round ribs. Unlike modern strip-built boats, the planks of a Peterborough are spiled, or shaped so that the width of each plank is even with all the of the others at any point in the hull, so that the same number of planks can be used over the whole length of the boat. Modern strip-built boats use straight strips of even width, necessitating the use of shorter pieces to fill in where the hull is widest. This boat is in very good original condition. EVS 08
