Description

Dugout canoe Built by David Shoppenagon (b. circa 1808, d. Dec. 25, 1911) circa 1860. Canoe was built for the Burrows family of Saginaw, Michigan. George L. Burrows was partners with Ezra Rush, purchased 400 acres for timber in what turned out to be the heart of the Missinabee Iron Range. Sold property for $10 million. Rush later loaned George Eastman $5000 to start a photography business. Burrows offered to bail out a financially strapped University of Rochester if they changed the name to Burrows University (didn't happen). Canoe was owned and used by George Burrows grandson Lynn Moore Burrows (b. 1884, d. 1944). History of canoe prior to this, if any, unknown. In 1930s, canoe was stored at the Oak Orchard Yacht Club, of which the Burrows family were members. Canoe sold out of family by Mrs. Blake to antique dealer Jim Wilson who in turn sold to donor Rod Taylor. Mr. Taylor still has one orignal paddle, Mrs. Blake retained a second. Rod Taylor provided copy of an image (he intends to donate original - 3/2011) of Kauk-e-chig-e-meh, another Chippewa portrayed holding a canoe paddle nearly identical to those that were with this canoe.
