Description

1948 Olympic racing canoe, smooth skin, decked on both ends, "US Olympic" logo on bow deck. four paddles, one canvas and wood-framed knee rest says "Yonkers" on side. Canoe built by Steve Lysak, raced by Lysak and Steve MacKnowski. Won gold at 1948 Olympics in London. They were the first American men to win gold in the Men's C-2 10000 metres competition in canoeing at the 1948 Summer Olympics. The C-2 event is raced by two-man sprint canoes. Heats and final took place on August 11, 1948. Their winning time was 55:55.4. They also won silver in the C-2 1000 metres on August 12, 1948 with a time of 5:08.2. The canoe is heavily altered from the original. ICF (international canoe federation) met after the '48 games decided to change specs for all of the boats. As soon as the Olympics were over that boat turned from a double canoe to a single and new regulations were developed for a double. The next 20 years it was raced both as a canoe and kayak in national championships. Width requirement was reduced. So Lysak cut down all the sides by 2 inches. Completely about functionality for Steve so he would alter the boat to accommodate the new regulations. The Peanut canoe in the gallery is the original width of what Steve's canoe was. The boat is set up now for kayaking with the removable seat. With a 9 foot double blade paddle.
