Description

1980.002 Boat Type: Decked Sailing Canoe, 16/30 Builder: Unknown Model: Unknown Length: 15'3" Beam: 30" Date Built: 1880-1900 This is a beautiful sailing canoe of uncertain make. It is a very thoughtfully laid out and remarkably well-built boat. It has no builder plate, but has been identified by some as being from the shop of Captain George Woodward Ruggles (1859-1912) a very highly regarded builder of sailing canoes. Captain Ruggles built many winning boats for the sailing canoe races of the American Canoe Association, and between the ACA and the English Royal Canoe Club. Captain Ruggles was not the proprietor of a professional shop, and built all of his boats by himself, between the years 1884-1892. Though a successful boat builder, his life's work was in engineering. The boat is carvel planked cedar over oak, with Spanish cedar decks and bulkheads. A nickel-plated steel hatch opens into the forward compartment, which was built to be airtight. At some point the aft mast hole was moved forward about 12". The boat is in decent shape, hull complete but with no finish. A section of the coaming is missing. EVS 08
