Description

2007.016 Mermaid II Boat Type: Sailing Canoe Builder: Gilbert Model: n/a Length: 16' Beam: 30" Date Built: 1924 Mermaid II is a 16/30 class sailing canoe built by Gilbert in 1924. It was based on the boat Mermaid, which was built in 1913 by Stevens and owned by Leo Friede of the ACA at Sugar Island, and which won many races over its 10-year lifespan. It was unfortunately destroyed by fire in 1923 while on loan to Gilbert to be used as a model for a fleet of racing canoes. After its destruction, the lines were obtained from Stevens and this boat, Mermaid II, was built. Measurements taken off of the first Mermaid were also used in the design of Tomahawk (2007.017), a canoe built by Malette to beat Mermaid, a feat which it never achieved. This boat and its predecessor are well documented in American Canoe Association yearbooks in the ABM archives. More complete information on this boat and Tomahawk are in the Accession file 2007.016. This boat along with Tomahawk, acc. no. 2007.017, was purchased from Douglas Fowler with funds provided by William Kaiser and Reg Britton. EVS 08
