Description

2007.017 Tomahawk Boat Type: Sailing Canoe Builder: Malette Model: n/a Length: 16' Beam: 30" Date Built: 1914 Tomahawk is an original unrestored 16/30 class sailing canoe built by William John "Jack" Malette of Gananoque, ON in 1914. Malette began building boats around 1910 and built many types of craft, including iceboats, launches, and tourboats, including boats for the Gananoque Boat Line. Tomahawk was designed by William Rees, based on the lines of a then-unbeatable decked sailing canoe called Mermaid, which Rees had taken the line off of as she lay awaiting shipment at the Customs dock one fall. Malette built the boat which was purchased by R. Britton, but it was never able to beat the Mermaid. Mermaid was owned by Leo Friede of the ACA at Sugar Island. A complete account of this story, written and researched by Phoebe Tritton, is in the accession file 2007.016 This boat along with Mermaid II, acc. no. 2007.016, was purchased from Douglas Fowler with funds provided by William Kaiser and Reg Britton.
